From Melwood to Florida: Fowler Academy’s Annual Journey Across the Atlantic

March 19, 2026

Every spring, a group of young players leaves Liverpool and travels more than four thousand miles to Florida.

They come from the Robbie Fowler Education and Football Academy, based at Melwood, one of the most recognizable training grounds in English football. What began as a single visit has now grown into an annual journey that brings Fowler Academy players to the United States to compete, train, and experience the game in a different environment.

Now preparing for its third consecutive year, the tour has become an important part of the academy’s development calendar.

Football Development Beyond the Training Ground

Founded by Liverpool and England legend Robbie Fowler, the academy was created to combine education with elite football training. Players develop their game while continuing their academic studies, preparing for pathways that may include university football or professional opportunities.

International travel plays a key role in that process.

Competing abroad challenges players in ways that training alone cannot. Different styles of play, unfamiliar opponents, and new environments push players to adapt and grow both on and off the pitch.

Building a Tradition

The first Fowler Academy tour to Florida took place in 2024, when a delegation of players traveled to compete against American teams and participate in international competition.

The experience quickly proved valuable.

Players faced strong opposition, including MLS academy programs, and the group captured the U19 title at the Easter International Cup. Just as important were the moments away from the matches, where players experienced a new culture and built connections with teams and communities across Florida.

The success of that first visit laid the foundation for what has now become a returning program.

Competition, Culture, and Opportunity

During their time in Florida, the players take part in a schedule that blends competition with exploration.

Matches against American clubs provide the competitive side of the tour. At the same time, the group visits university campuses to learn about the American college system, where athletics and academics operate together.

For many players traveling from England, it is their first exposure to the opportunity of combining football with a university education.

The tour also includes time to experience the culture and landscape of Florida. Community activities, youth clinics, and local excursions give the players a chance to connect with the communities they visit.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming tour, scheduled for March 29 through April 7, 2026, will bring another group of Fowler Academy players across the Atlantic.

By now the journey from Melwood to Florida has become more than just a soccer trip. It is a yearly opportunity for players to step outside their familiar surroundings and experience the global nature of the game.

For the players making the trip, the matches will be memorable. But the real value often comes from the moments in between. The friendships formed, the cultures experienced, and the understanding that football connects people no matter where it is played.

And when the next group of players leaves Melwood for Florida, they will be continuing a journey that is already becoming part of the academy’s story.
